This is a 12-Day Leopard hunt in Selous Reserve.
A typical day on safari will begin with an early wake-up call before dawn and after a filling breakfast.
We will then depart at first light of day, looking for plains game to shoot for bait. Meanwhile, our trackers will be scouting around looking to find fresh signs of Leopard activity. There are good size Toms that offer the opportunity to film your Leopard hunt in the daytime.
The elusive Leopard is represented in good numbers in this concession with cats normally on bait within a few days, and most of the hits will be in the daylight hours.
Our experienced Professional Hunters know the area well and will have picked some of the favored spots for hanging the baits. Impala and Reedbuck are often a good choice for start-up bait. Sandy rivers through the concession provide excellent opportunities for Leopard, while the nearby rolling hills provide good stalking opportunities for other game.
A bait tree will be selected in an area where fresh Leopard activity has been spotted, and a blind made of grass and wood structure will be erected near the bait tree when a suitable leopard is feeding and identified. The professional hunter will be able to determine if the cat is a morning or afternoon feeder and will determine the amount of time being spent on the bait.
Leopard hunting is a waiting game, where the hunter and professional hunter will spend time in the blind during early mornings and late afternoons until they are successful. The hunting of plains game will continue during the day between the morning and afternoon sessions in the blind.
Just thinking of roaming the African wilderness, following in the footsteps of legends like Hemingway, Livingstone, and Ruark. It is a privilege bestowed upon only a few. Do not miss this privilege to hunt in one of the most remote areas in Africa today!
In addition to a Leopard, you can also take two (2) Cape buffalo, Hippo, Crocodile, along with a good variety of plains game. This includes Roosevelt Sable, Peterson’s Eland, EA Kudu, Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Nyasa Wildebeest, Waterbuck Common, EA Zebra, EA Bushbuck, Common & Southern Reedbuck, Spotted Hyaena, Southern Impala, Olive Baboon, Warthog, Bushpig, Vervet Monkey, Common Duiker, and game birds. As for collectors, this is the place to take at least one for your collection!
Our Selous Camp staff will be attentive to all of your needs. You will enjoy tasty meals and then retire to relax around the campfire while discussing the day’s events and planning for the next day’s hunt,
The Selous Reserve
The Selous Reserve is the largest game reserve in the world covering over 54,000 sq. kilometers (20,850 sq. mi.) of Africa’s most unspoiled wilderness. The vegetation is predominantly miombo woodland, uninhabited and divided into 51 blocks - 46 hunting blocks and 5 photographic blocks, varying in size from 250-500 square miles.
The concession is on the banks of the mighty Rufiji River in the northwestern part of the Selous Game Reserve where Hippo sounds remind one of the remoteness. Sandy rivers running through the concession provide excellent opportunities for a Leopard, while the nearby rolling hills provide excellent stalking opportunities for Cape Buffalo.
Good numbers of Lions and Leopards are present and daytime sightings of Leopards are not uncommon. Elephant numbers have stabilized with recent anti-poaching efforts and are showing a slow rebound in numbers.
