This is undoubtedly hunting in wild Africa at its best! Buffalo hunters dream about hunting the Selous, where herds of more than a hundred buffalo are a common sight. Hunters will see a lot of Cape Buffalo during the hunt and after sunset will sit around the campfire and listen to the roar of wild lions while toasting the day’s hunt.
This is one of those memorable trips to take with your hunting buddy, as the Cape buffalo hunting is something you will both talk about for years to come. To get a shot at a trophy Cape Buffalo, you need to see a lot of Buffalo, and Tanzania’s Selous Reserve will not disappoint! You will see lots of Buffalo daily as you search for that special old bull.
A typical day on this safari will be an early wake-up call before dawn and after we serve you a filling breakfast. You will depart from camp with a fully-equipped hunting vehicle at first light of day and begin looking for animal signs and tracks. All hunting is traditionally done on foot by following fresh tracks using experienced trackers.
A mid-day lunch will be in the bush under tree canopies, and after a bit of a rest the afternoon hunt will continue on the tracks found in the morning, or trackers will begin searching for fresher signs while you hunt plains game on the way back to camp.
After arriving back at camp at or after sunset, it will be a time to enjoy a refreshing hot shower before a relaxing evening enjoying the fine cuisine prepared by the chef.
The PH is a highly experienced dangerous game hunter with many years of dangerous game hunting experience in Africa’s big game, and you will be in competent hands for the duration of your hunt. His handy trackers/skinners will be among the best that Africa has to offer.
There is a good selection of plains game available on this safari. In addition to the one (1) trophy Cape buffalo, you can also take a second Cape Buffalo, Hippo, Crocodile, along with the plains game. This includes Lichtenstein Hartebeest, Nyasa Wildebeest, Waterbuck Common, EA Zebra, Common & Southern Reedbuck, Spotted Hyaena, Jackal, Southern Impala, Olive Baboon, Warthog, Bushpig, Verv
The Selous Reserve is the largest game reserve in the world covering over 54,000 sq. kilometers (20,850 sq. mi.) of Africa’s most unspoiled wilderness. The vegetation is predominantly miombo woodland, uninhabited and divided into 51 blocks - 46 hunting blocks and 5 photographic blocks, varying in size from 250-500 square miles.
The concession is on the banks of the mighty Rufiji River in the northwestern part of the Selous Game Reserve where Hippo sounds remind one of the remoteness. Sandy rivers running through the concession provide excellent opportunities for a Leopard, while the nearby rolling hills provide excellent stalking opportunities for Cape Buffalo.
The Selous is a buffalo hunters dream! Although probably not a place for one to shoot a giant buffalo there are herds and herds of Buffalo here, into the thousands. A Buffalo Trophy Bull of 40 - 42 inches in Selous is one big prize, but buffalo hunting is somewhat of a numbers game and hunters will look over many buffalo on this hunt.Â
Good numbers of Lions and Leopards also are also present here and daytime sightings of Leopards are not uncommon. Elephant numbers have stabilized with recent anti-poaching efforts and are showing a slow rebound in numbers.
